Epilogue

University classes ended, and I hopped on the bus. After taking it to my destination, Rio was already waiting for me. When I approached her…

“Late.” Rio crossed her arms, as she threw a complaint at me.

Not cute at all, as always.

“The lecture took longer. I told you I’d be late, right?”

“Doesn’t mean you should just take your time like that. It’s already 5pm, if we don’t hurry, the municipal office is gonna close.” Rio seemed a bit rushed, as she pointed towards the building.

Today, we agreed to meet up in front of the local municipal office. Of course, there can only be one reason why we would choose this location.

“You can hand in the marriage registration even when the municipal office is closed.”

When I told Rio about this, she stopped in her tracks, and looked at me in confusion.

“Eh…R-Really?”

“Yeah, their reception is open 24/7.”

“…What, so there was no need to call Hayashida after all.”

“Wha…You had Hayashida-san drive you here?”

“Ah, w-well! I thought it’d be bad if I ended up late!”

Hayashida-san really is being used to no end, huh…My condolences. Anyway, the two of us walked next to each other, heading towards the municipal office.

“We could have just sent it in the post, you know? I don’t see the reason for us to come here.”

“We can’t do that.” Rio immediately denied my idea. “Sending it with the post is so dull. If it’s something this important, we both have to do it together.”

“………”

“O-Of course, this is all acting. A happy and lovey-dovey couple would hand this in in person as well, so we have to do the same…”

“…Right.”

Lovey-dovey couples would hand it in together. Hence, we do the same. All so that we seem like a real married couple.

“Your marriage registration, I see. Please wait a moment.”

After we told the person at the reception our issue, they had us sit down for a moment. We apparently barely made it in time for the normal reception.

“Rio, you didn’t forget anything today, did you?”

“Can you not take me for an idiot? I have everything with me.” She spoke with arrogance in her tone, but eventually grew worried as she started looking through her bag. “Stamp, official copy of the family register…personal ID, student card, insurance card…Yeah, I have everything. What about you, Mr Underage?”

“Got everything. Even the letter of consent from my guardians.”

As you need that when getting married with someone underage.

“…We really are going to get married, huh.” Rio said in a mutter.

“Now’s your time to turn back.”

“Ahaha, what are you talking about? No way I could pull out now.”

“You’re right, haha.”

The marriage ceremony, moving in together, we already finished everything except handing in the marriage registration. Although we weren’t exactly married by law, we were acting like a married couple. That’s why, handing in the marriage registration is nothing but another step. That’s all there was to it, and yet—An emotion that’s hard to describe resided deep inside my chest.

“Starting today, I’ll be Isurugi Rio, huh…I feel like Tamaki Rio sounds much better.”

“Should we just keep each other’s names then? Ah, no, that doesn’t work yet in Japan.”

“…That’s not the problem here. At a time like this, you should say something like ‘That’s not true. Isurugi Rio sounds just as cute’. You really don’t understand a woman’s heart at all.”

“…Sorry about that.”

“That’s why you aren’t popular, Haru. Falling in love with someone like you…there’s probably only one person in this entire world.” Rio said, gently moving towards me—as she took my hand.

“Rio…”

“Let’s become a great married couple, Haru.” With dampened eyes, she looked directly at me.

Her words sounded like she believed in a wonderful future for us, filled with love and affection. As my heart skipped a beat, Rio hid her mouth with one hand.

“A fake married couple, that is.” She added.

I could see that she was grinning to herself…You wench, teasing me even at a moment like this.

“Fufu, are you embarrassed? You totally are, right?”

“…I’m not.”

Normally I would have complained like always, but since Rio showed such a gleeful smile, I was forced to swallow any of that.

“Isurugi-sama, please.”

I heard my name, so I stood up. I missed the timing to let go, so we were still holding hands.

“Let’s go, Rio.”

“…Yeah.” After nodding along, Rio stood up.

With our hands connected, we started walking ahead. We were like a couple crossing the final gate. Starting today, we’ll be married for real. We both agreed to this marriage to accomplish our own goals—as you would call that a fake marriage. I don’t know what will happen from here on out, neither do I know how long this marriage will last. People call a marriage a ‘Graveyard’ or ‘Goal line’, but in my case—I can only see this as the starting line.

Inexperienced as I was, I had no idea what would happen from here on out. We chose to take a different path from a normal married couple after all. There’s no real goal in sight at the end of this journey, as we have to continue acting. Walking down an undetermined path leaves me with anxiety and fear, but…this is the path that I chose.

That’s why I have to walk this path with confidence. Of course, I’m not alone in this. If I were to give an example, it’s like a three-legged race. And with these feelings in mind—

I had my name entered in the family register, together with my ex-girlfriend.
