Prologue

I might be a bit late in saying this, but I don’t like ‘teachers’.

—I didn’t like them.

Every individual you could refer to as a teacher, I hated. At times I would be cheeky and rebellious, which would often get me called to the staff office after school to get an earful. However, there’s not much time left in this high school life of mine. One more year, to be exact. On top of that, after I got into my second year, I wasn’t called to the staff office as often. Rather, I was called elsewhere for a different reason..

“Fujiki Maka-sensei, I—like you.”

Class had ended, and I was present in the guidance counselling room. In front of me sat the homeroom teacher of class 3A, Fujiki Maka-sensei. She possessed long brown hair, wearing a tight navy blue suit and mini skirt, as well as stockings beneath.

“I’m sorry, Saigi-kun. Did you say something right now?”

Maka-sensei had been gazing down her tablet all that time, only to suddenly look up at me.

“They finally set it up so that all teachers have tablet terminals at their disposal, but they’re using a mysterious OS, so it’s a bit troublesome to use. What did you want?”

“I was just wondering that it’s taking some time.”

“Yes, my apologies…Um, where were we…Ah, I finally have your grades from second year. Maybe I should have used the PC instead?”

“Our school is pretty rich. They should have just bought some easy-to-use tablets instead.”

“You can say that again. Do they even care about us?”

That is something terrifying to say in front of a student. Then again, I’m glad she didn’t hear me. Thanks to this new gadget in her hands, I somehow managed to get through this situation. If she had heard me, everything would have been over—Everything referring to her career as a teacher of course.

Now that I remember, I won’t ever forget about it again. If I were to fall in love with Maka-sensei for real—we would have to say goodbye. Back then, when I first heard about that, I doubted her. Now, after knowing Maka-sensei for an entire year, I can say for certain that her determination is the real deal. If I were to confess to her, she would undoubtedly quit at this school.

Since Maka-sensei is always serious about her own work and the people around her, I sincerely doubt she was joking.

“Well, I remember the grades of the student I was responsible for last year. No need to show it on here.”

“Eh, everyone? All of the 40 people’s grades?”

“I check them regularly after all. Not even a month has passed since we finished the grades for the third term. How could I forget everyone’s grades in every subject?”

She says it like it’s nothing…If it was me, I’d definitely be messing up the math. I guess she can remember all of them because of how serious she is about her students.

“The classes roughly stay the same as well. Only a few end up in different classes.”

“There four who changed classes because of their choice of subjects.”

“And we got one student from a different class.”

On top of that, we from class 3A had one student transfer to a different school all-together, but I guess she was acting kind in her own way by not saying that.

“I’m honestly pretty surprised that I got you as a homeroom teacher again.”

“The others kept their own classes as well, right?”

“I figured that you were set up to become the homeroom teacher of my and Tenka-san’s class.”

“Nobody but you would work the shadows like that…I’m just a newcomer in my third year now.”

“I’m scared to imagine the day when you actually have some influence here at this school…I feel like you’ll actually turn it into your castle…”

“Listen here, Saigi-kun, who do you think I am? Oh, your history grades are pretty good, now that I look at them.”

“I often watch history dramas from overseas, and talk about it online.”

“So that’s your way of studying, I see…Valid.” Maka-sensei operated the clunky tablet, and let out a groan. “From what I can see with your grades in the second year, you should be able to make it up to university no problem. You were 40th place at the end-of-year exams as well. It’s not an easy feat to make that high in Seikadai.”

“Thanks for that…”

Honestly speaking, I’m pretty surprised myself. Until last summer, I kept my grades on an average level, but now I’m definitely in the upper brass. I have a private tutor after all—and I’m working hard in English so that Maka-sensei doesn’t give me an earful.

“I’ll just assume that you want to continue with Seikadai’s university, correct, Saigi Makoto-kun?”

“Yes, that is correct.”

Seikadai Academy is organized with an elevator system, meaning that you can move up from the grade school division all the way to the university. We may be a prestigious school, but we’re definitely not at the top of the country. There’s many students who attend an outsider university after receiving good grades here.

“With your grades like this, it still wouldn’t be too late to search for an outsider university in April. Have you consulted your parents about this?”

“They just told me to do whatever I wanted.”

Because of their income, I didn’t need to worry about anything, it seems. Leaving aside the source of said income, I’m thankful that I have so many options thanks to it.

“Great. It’s my first time being responsible for the third-years, but it greatly helps that no student has to worry about making it to university.” Maka-sensei wrote down something on her tablet with an electronic pen, and let out a sigh.

It feels weird to think I would more often come to this future guidance counselling room, rather than the student guidance counselling room.

“Keep in mind that this year passes faster than any other. If you want to change your future prospects, now is the time to work on it.”

“I will. However, I doubt there will be much changing.”

My admired Senpai decided to move overseas during the fall of her third year, but I doubt anything crazy like that will happen for me.

“That concludes today’s guidance counselling them. Good work, Saigi-kun.”

“Thank you very much, Maka-sensei.” I gently bowed my head, and stood up from my seat.

As expected, she had been serious from start to finish. If anything, I was the one blurting out nonsense.

“Then, if you would excuse me.”

“Ah, wait a moment, Saigi-kun.”

“Eh?” I turned around in surprise.

“Why are you this wary of me…”

“I-I’m sorry, I just got a deja-vu of the past…”

After all, be it at the student guidance counselling or the English preparation room, many bad things happened before, it’s just a force of habit to be wary.

“Even I wouldn’t dare do the ‘education’ here. That’s not what I meant.” Maka-sensei took a deep breath. “We’ll do the ‘Graduation Exam’ soon, so be ready for it.”

“…We’re really doing this, huh?”

“I follow through with what I say. That’s all.”

“…I understand.” I bowed again, and stepped out of the room.

Once I was a bit further away from it, I took a deep breath.

“Future guidance counselling, being a third-year, my last year at school…and the Graduation Exam, huh.”

Since I follow the elevator system that doesn’t require me to do any entrance exam, I guess you could call my third-year much more comfortable than another person’s. But, it’s not that easy mode at all. After all, there is one important part of this equation—the Graduation Exam—that I know absolutely nothing about.

All I know is that it won’t be anything easy. I mean, I doubt that this exam is related to my actual studies in any way, but I can’t help but worry about it.

—And with that in mind, my final year began.

  1. Thanks for the chapter. I wonder if the story will continue after graduation with them officially dating.
