Chapter 2: Tag Force

—Nanato—

With the end-of-terms safely behind us, the all-so-exciting summer break was right before our eyes.

“I’m going to return your exams now!”

The last subject I’ll get back seems to be math. So far, I managed to avoid any supplementary classes in any of the prior subjects. And since Tsubasa and Reina both helped me study for my math exams, I managed to confidently work my way through it. I’m fairly confident, too.

“Amami Nanato!”

“Yes.”

I accepted the answer sheet from the teacher and saw that I had scored 70 points. Surprised by how positive this result was, I couldn’t stop myself from striking a victorious pose.

“How did it go?”

“I did just fine. Thanks, Reina.”

She walked over to me, looking a bit worried, so I showed her my results. On her sheet, I could see a solid 87 points. My score was already above average in our class, but she went even beyond that.

“Guess that settles this issue.”

“Yeah. I can’t wait for summer break. Right, Tsubasa?”

“Yup. To think I’d be able to spend another summer break with you…I’m way too happy.”

After Reina and Tsubasa started to get along, Tsubasa and I could talk more normally in class without our classmates giving us weird looks. But even so, Reina and I are still supposed to be dating, technically.

Lunch break rolled around, and we all spent it together as usual. Since summer break was right around the corner, the atmosphere in the classroom was a lot more upbeat than usual. A few of our classmates were discussing their plans, too.

“Nanato-kun, I made this, so feel free to eat it.”

“Oh, today again? Thanks as always.”

Tsubasa offered me the cabbage rolled up in bacon from her lunch. Lately, she’d make some extra food for me, feeding me like this.

“It’s delicious.”

“Th-Thanks.”

“I should be the one thanking you.”

I bet she puts a lot of effort into her cooking every day. Thanks to that, I get to eat delicious food every day, which I’m incredibly thankful for.

“Don’t you do your own lunch, Chiba?”

“I’m busy doing makeup in the morning. But if I really wanted to, it’d be easy. No problem.”

Itsuki started talking to Reina, but she doesn’t seem to be interested in the idea of making lunch. She’s always mindful of her calorie intake, so she probably isn’t too bothered with what she eats.

“Oh yeah, I also made some galette, so have a try if you’d like,” I handed Tsubasa some of the sweet food, but she looked at me in confusion.

“Huh? What’s a galette?”

“It’s a French type of sweet food.”

“O-Oh, wow. You’re amazing, Nanato-kun.”

I feel like she was a bit taken aback by that, but I’m guessing that’s because I was a bit too obsessed with making sweets.

“How crazy are you for sweets?”

“Just a new hobby of mine. Call me Patissier Nanato.”

“Not gonna happen, but I do like that hobby.”

Itsuki was oddly supportive of my hobby for once. I personally think it’s something commendable.

“Itsuki-kun, thanks for this. It was really fun.”

Shibayu handed Itsuki a plastic bag with lots of manga volumes inside. Lately, she’s been calling him by his first name, too, so they’ve also gotten a lot closer.

“What manga is that?”

“A romance manga between a young boy and an office lady.”

“…Yep, that’s Itsuki, all right.”

I’m not surprised his interests reflect in his choice of manga or light novels.

“You’ve been talking a lot lately, you two,” Tsubasa said to Shibayu.

“So are you and Reinan, though?”

“Ah, yeah, I guess…”

The conversation was flipped on its head. Normally, Shibayu would always cling to Tsubasa, but I guess she’s been feeling lonely since there weren’t many chances for them to hang out lately.

“You sure you’re not flirting around when nobody is watching?”

“Why the hell would we do that?”

I thought Shibayu was just throwing that in there as a joke, but Reina vehemently denied it.

“But just the other day, we were both sleeping in your bed, right Reina-chan?”

“Y-You idiot…!”

Reina hurriedly covered Tsubasa’s mouth. Oh yeah, I remember something like that happening. Huh? Why’s Shibayu frozen up like that?

“Wh-What’s wrong?” Itsuki shook her head, pulling her soul back into her body.

“Wh-Why…” Shibayu seemed genuinely in shock.

I guess she’s not the biggest fan of Tsubasa sticking more to Reina than herself.

“What’s wrong, Yuzuyu-chan?”

“I bet she wants to take a nap with you, too, Tsubasa. Going on a trip with friends for a sleepover…Sounds like a dream, right?” Reina jumped in to provide what I’m assuming is an assist, but she also sounds a bit guilty.

“That’s true. I’d love to do something like that with Yuzuyu-chan. Just talking all night long and all that.”

Hearing those words, life returned to Shibayu’s facial color, as she leaned forward.

“Now you said it! You definitely said it, Tsubasa-chan!”

“Y-Yeah, I did…?” Tsubasa was unsure on how to react to this change of momentum.

Meanwhile, Reina face-palmed in disbelief.

“Then let’s go on a trip this summer break! And stay at an inn for the night. We’ve been saving up some money thanks to our part-time jobs, right?”

Met with Shibayu’s suggestion, the rest of us looked at each other, probably wanting to confirm what the others were thinking. I think it’s a good idea, but—

“I’m all in for it.”

Surprisingly, Itsuki was the first one to voice his agreement.

“Same here. A trip with everyone sounds wonderful.”

Hearing Tsubasa’s statement, Shibayu pushed her fist into the air.

“If Nanato’s down, then you can count me in,” Reina looked at my face as she gave a vague response.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life.”

“Then I will follow you, even to the depths of hell!” Reina happily gave me a thumbs-up.

No way I’d be missing out on a chance like this.

“Then it’s decided. Good talk, guys.” Shibayu nodded and began setting up a plan. “Question is…where do we go?”

“What about camping in the mountains? I’ve been watching a YouTuber doing camping videos lately, so I’ve been meaning to try it out,” I said.

“Not happening. Just go alone.”

“Why?!”

My suggestion was immediately rejected. I guess Shibayu’s not the biggest fan of mountain camping.

“Going to the beach might be nice.”

“Yes, Tsubasa-chan! That’s absolutely it! It can only be that! What idiot would suggest the mountains, seriously.”

But the beach…is dangerous. I’d rather not, if possible.

“The ocean’s full of jellyfish, right? That sounds like it could be bad.”

“And you’re not worried about encountering wild bears in the mountains? Keep saying stupid nonsense like that and Yuzu’s gonna blow a fuse for real.”

“You’re already furious as far as I can tell?!”

Shibayu really seems dead-set on going to the beach. I don’t think I can stop her.

“If we’re gonna stay nearby, why not Atami in Shizuoka?”

“Good idea. That way, we won’t have to spend half a fortune.”

“Exactly, Itsuki-kun. You really get it, unlike a certain someone.”

That damn…She’s looking down on me. I’m gonna bring up an even better idea and show you.

“Why don’t we stop by a hot spring inn near the beach?”

“That’s good! Great idea, Amamicchi! You’re pretty cool after all!”

“Right?”

Shibayu did a complete 180 and now proceeded to praise me. She seems to like the idea of a hot spring very much.

“If we’re going to the beach, then I need to buy a new swimsuit.”

We all reacted to Tsubasa’s statement in unison. That’s right, that’s why I wanted to avoid going to the beach. With just a swimsuit, it would reveal their slender bodies. And as a man, I would die to see them in swimsuits, but I feel like the stimulus might be a bit too much. Especially considering Reina with her great body and well-endowed chest…I might just pass out.

“Tsubasa-chan in a swimsuit…Holy smokes.” Shibayu blushed furiously as she dwelled in her fantasies.

I guess this was the real reason she was so desperate to go to the beach.

“I guess I gotta get back to some training.”

I’m gonna be wearing a swimsuit, too, so I have to look the best.

“I think you’re well-built already, so there’s no need to panic over it.”

“But Itsuki’s pretty buff, so I’ll just look pathetic standing next to him.”

“Then just wear a competitive swimsuit?”

“Then everyone will laugh at me!”

I don’t want to look pathetic in front of the two girls and seem unreliable, so I should get some more training done.

“Then let’s talk about details and all that tomorrow during lunch break.”

“Agreed.”

I put the talk to an end and everyone nodded. Going to the beach and hot spring with everyone…It sounds fun, but I’m worried something might happen, too. At the very least, it’ll be a pleasant memory. This is what it means to taste youth, I bet.

School was over, so I headed to my part-time job as always. With summer break closing in on us, it meant that classes would be on break for a while, but I’d still have my work to worry about. And we’re probably gonna get more customers during that time, too. Before heading inside the changing room, I loudly knocked on the door. Who knows, Susuki might be changing in there, after all.

“Come in.”

I got permission from inside, so I opened the door.

“Hey.”

“Hey. I’m gonna change right now, so could you close your eyes?”

“Y-Yeah, got it.”

For some reason, she let me enter the room without having finished changing. I just did as I was told and closed my eyes. She turned her back to me and started taking off her clothes. She might not even realize even if I’d open my eyes. I wonder why she keeps me in this position anyway. Does she trust me that much?

“I just took off my shirt, so you can’t open your eyes,” she even reported her current status.

I don’t know if she’s urging me to look or whatever, but I’m gonna keep my eyes shut nuh-uh.

“If you don’t want me to look this badly, why did you even let me inside the room?”

“Good question. And yet, I did this…Can you tell why?”

“B-Because you’d be fine if it was me…No, that can’t be it.”

I couldn’t think of any other reason, so I just voiced the first thing that came into my mind. How embarrassing…

“Correct.”

“Wha…For real?!”

As my eyesight was dark, I could hear Susuki’s footsteps approaching me. Was I actually correct…? What is that Susuki thinking?

“As a reward, you can open your eyes.”

“Wh-What are you talking about?”

I slowly opened my eyes, met Susuki standing in front of me. However, she had already changed into her work uniform.

“Wah…Wait, you already changed.”

“Of course I did, you pervert.” Susuki gave me a smug look.

It seems like she was teasing me.

“I…I didn’t get excited or anything.”

“And yet you look extremely disappointed.”

“I was just thinking how boring life was.”

“You’re so disappointed you’ve given up on the world, I see.”

Oh yeah, I remember her absolutely loving to tease other people. In her mind, we’ve probably gotten back to how we were in middle school. It’s a bit surprising to me.

“But you properly kept your eyes closed, huh? Good boy.” She rubbed my head with a serious expression.

I feel like I’ve turned into her puppy.

“You’re just making fun of me.”

“Not at all. You just reminded me of a puppy desperately waiting for his owner to come home.”

“Yep, that’s what you call making fun of people.”

I wasn’t too far off the mark, it seems.

“I’m in high school, so don’t treat me like a kid.”

“Really? Then I can’t wait for you to act like an adult now.”

“…I’ll do my best.”

But it’s no use. She’s evidently putting herself above me. How did this happen? She’s taking the lead in everything.

“Oh my, it’s almost time. We should go.”

“Woof.”

We both headed to the front of the store. In a rush, I actually responded like a puppy. Her hypnosis seems to be working just fine.

“There’s an event happening in the mall today, so we’re probably gonna see a lot more customers, according to the owner. Can you do your part properly?”

“Of course I can.”

“My, how reliable.”

Just as she said, we’ve been practically working non-stop from the moment our shift began. So, we continued in silence as we prepared the crepes the customers wished for. Looking over at Susuki, she just got some necessary ingredients from the fridge. That way, I could focus on my own duty. She really is a reliable co-worker. I feel like I could do the work with my eyes closed. No, that’s a bit much, I guess.

“Good work. Think we made it through the rush.”

“I…I can’t stop. My hands are working automatically. What’s next on the menu?”

“What kind of awakening is this?! Calm down, we don’t have any more orders.” Susuki gave me a look of disbelief as she urged me to calm down with both her hands like I was some dinosaur in a movie.

“Great work out there. I’m glad you’re such a crepe nut.”

“And I’m glad you’re the cash register master.”

For some reason, Susuki opened her arms like she was some zombie, as she approached me.

“Wh-What are you doing…?” I grew scared and took a step back, which made Susuki pout.

“Nothing much.”

“You were acting like a zombie there.”

“…Oh I’m so sorry, I guess?” Susuki seemed angry and looked away.

What was she planning on doing there…? After that, she remained in an awful mood until our shift ended, and we returned to the changing room.

“Amami-kun, there’s something I should tell you.”

I was preparing to head home when the owner Tanaka-san called out to me. I was hoping to go back with Susuki in order to cheer her up, but she just left ahead of me.

“Amami-kun, do you have any interest in this?” She handed me a flier.

There, it said “Patissier Training” in bold letters. And it says that it’s happening during this summer break.

“The management company looking after this crepe shop is holding this for free for interested employees.”

“For free…? But should a high school student like me really be participating in this?”

“I think someone as motivated and dedicated as you deserves it more than anybody else. Not too long ago, you said you wanted to become a patissier, right? I think this will become a great experience.”

“I understand. I’ll gratefully accept the flier and think about it.”

“Wonderful. I will need your answer next week, though.”

I should keep this answer on hold and talk with my friends about this. Well, the Patissier Nanato inside of me is already dead-set on participating.

—Tsubasa—

My shift at the juice store ended, so I made my way over to the crepe Nanato-kun is working at. In reality, Reina-chan and I promised to go see him there together, but her work seems to be dragging out a bit longer, so I thought of meeting up with her once she’s done. Waiting a bit, I spotted the girl that Nanato-kun was with that last time. Hirose-kun said that she was supposedly Nanato-kun’s former girlfriend. They apparently were dating in middle school but broke up shortly after.

I personally find that rather hard to believe. And it’s frustrating to me because she once stood where I desperately wanted to be. Even the fact that she rejected him hurt him. I can’t forgive that, and all the thoughts in my mind mixed up into something resembling anger. I don’t want her to get close to him again, and yet they happened to work at the same part-time job. She managed to acquire a connection between her and Nanato-kun. I came all the way from the countryside and yet she was handed it on a silver platter…

“What’s your deal? Why are you glaring at me like this?”

“Ah, um, I’m sorry…”

As she passed by me, this ex-girlfriend now stopped in her tracks to look at me. I guess my disdain for her was obvious.

“You got a problem with me?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Say what?”

“No, it’s nothing. I’m sorry.”

What am I saying? Saying something like that would make me no better than some delinquent. I have to keep my feelings in check.

“Are you…Shiroki Tsubasa?”

We haven’t even met before, but she even knows my name. Did Ootsuka-san tell her? Or was it Nanato-kun…

“Y-Yes. Who are you?”

“Susuki,” she said bluntly, yet limiting it to her last name. “Are you waiting for Nanato?”

I nodded to that question, but I’m a bit concerned that she called him by his first name. I don’t think I like that very much. She confidently faced me with a scary face. I’ve got a thing to say to her, but this isn’t the mood for that.

“Does he know you’re coming to see him?”

“No. I just thought of coming over.”

She’s trying to gain control of the conversation. She doesn’t plan on letting me leave easily.

“And what then?”

“…Huh? I mean, talk with him?”

“You can just do that tomorrow at school, right?”

“Ah. Um.”

I couldn’t say anything back to that. I want to wait for Nanato-kun, but my legs are urging me to get away from here.

“You’re together at school, and now you’re even coming over to see him at his work? You’re like a stalker.”

“N-No, I’m not like that…”

“You might not see yourself like that, but it sure feels that way to me from an objective point of view. Maybe not on the level of a stalker, but you’re definitely clingy.”

I want to prove her wrong, but the words wouldn’t leave my mouth. They were stuck in my throat.

“We’ve been busy today, and he must be tired. I don’t think he has the energy to deal with you, either.”

“…I’m sorry.”

“I don’t need your apology. But if you do feel bad, maybe you should just head home for today?”

Just being here is hurting me. I want to run away. But, I came all this way to be reunited with him again. I don’t want to be apart. Running would be like admitting defeat.

“You’re still gonna wait?”

“If he’s that tired, then I want to cheer him up.”

“So you’re gonna prioritize yourself over him?” She glared at me again, robbing me of my words.

I could only look down to escape her gaze. Because of what she’s saying, it’s starting to feel like I really am a bad person. I was about to turn around and run away, when someone grabbed my shoulder. They wouldn’t allow me to turn around, facing this Susuki-san head-on.

“What are you doing to Tsubasa?” Reina-chan hugged my shoulder as she glared at Susuki-san.

She must have rushed here to meet Nanato-kun as she was faintly out of air.

“Doesn’t have anything to do with you.”

“I’m her friend, so it very much does.”

The two glared at each other. It was reassuring to know that Reina-chan had my back. I could feel the warmth return to my body.

“Also, haven’t I seen you somewhere before…”

I’ve been trying to keep my promise to Hirose-kun and kept the fact that she’s Nanato-kun’s ex a secret from Reina-chan. However, it wasn’t surprising if she’d figure it out eventually.

“Ah! I remember now! You’re the shitty woman who dated Nanato before! I didn’t realize it because of your work uniform, but that school uniform helped me remember.”

“I don’t want to hear that from the shitty slut gal from middle school.”

So Reina-chan knew her, after all. But just like me, Susuki-san also went on the full-force aggressive the second Reina-chan said anything.

“Huh? You’re working with him?”

“That’s right. We support each other as fellow colleagues,” Susuki-san said as if she wanted to put herself on a pedestal.

It’s like she thinks that she’s more important to Nanato-kun than anybody else.

“Can you leave him alone already?” Reina-chan said what I had tried to do all this time.

We’ve been rivals all this time, and yet it was very reassuring to have her by my side.

“Right back at you.”

“No need, just accept it. You’re a thing of the past.”

“…Don’t act like you know anything.”

Reina-chan’s words were as cold as ice as she glared at Susuki-san, who looked ready to leap at her. She probably used that expression on purpose, knowing that she was Nanato-kun’s ex. But, there’s something going on behind the scenes, otherwise Susuki-san wouldn’t be so confident.

“So how can you tell us to stay away from him without knowing our relationship with Nanato?”

“…That’s true. Apologies.”

Susuki-san suddenly went into a cooldown, apologizing for her previous outburst.

“I don’t know what you told Tsubasa earlier, but don’t try to intervene in our lives any more than this.” However, Reina-chan remained on the offensive. “Think about it. My boyfriend’s ex is now telling me what I can and can’t do. Wouldn’t that psis you off?”

Susuki-san looked down. I don’t know what she’s thinking, but from my perspective, it’s like Reina-chan was blaming her, and she was sad about it.

“If you get it, then why don’t you leave? Shoo-shoo.”

“H-Hey! What’s going on here?!”

Reina-chan gestured with her hands for Susuki-san to leave, as Nanato-kun appeared from behind us.

“Can’t you tell? These two have been harassing me this whole time. You should really choose your friends a bit better.”

As expected, Susuki-san was playing the victim, trying to plead with Nanato-kun.

“The hell? You started picking this fight in the first place!”

So she must have seen Nanato-kun coming out from the store, playing the victim card while trying to instigate Reina-chan. This way, we’re the ones who’ll look like the bad ones, and Nanato-kun might take her side.

“I’ve gotten hurt enough already. I’m leaving.” Susuki-san said and walked away as she had her head hanging low.

“What’s her deal?! God, she pisses me off.”

“D-Don’t be too hard on her, okay?” Nanato-kun tried to stop Reina-chan.

I guess she really is looking like the bad person in his eyes.

“…Why are you taking her side?”

“…Huh?”

Nanato-kun was bewildered at Reina-chan’s words. I don’t feel good blaming him even though he doesn’t understand the situation.

“Let’s go, Tsubasa.”

“Reina-chan…”

We’d originally wanted to head home with Nanato-kun, but she already took my hand to drag me away. However, since she helped me during the argument with Susuki-san, I can’t just cast her away now. But, I’m also worried about Nanato-kun. He must be worried more than enough in this current situation, so this definitely isn’t helping him.

“God, I’m so pissed!” Reina-chan groaned in anger.

“Did his words bother you this much?”

“Rather than worry about us, he protected that woman. He prioritized her. I can’t believe that.” Reina-chan formed a fist in frustration.

I’m relieved that she’s not angry with him.

“Doesn’t it bother you, Tsubasa?”

“It does. I’m incredibly angry.”

“See?” Reina-chan embraced me and rubbed my head.

Met with so much kindness, I couldn’t stop myself from complaining.

“She’s not fair. She got to go out with Nanato-kun before, now reunited with him…She has everything that I would be willing to sell my soul for.”

“I get that. Doesn’t even know how much we’ve been through…”

“That’s right. But it’s always those people not playing fair that win in this world.”

Sure, she might have her own problems. But, we can’t have what she has.

“But even so, if you just lash out on those people, you don’t have anything to gain from that.”

“Yeah…”

“Unfair people always take the quickest route, whereas diligent people take a detour. But, if the diligent people dash with all their might, they could very well pass by those who play unfairly.” I pushed Reina-chan’s back with my words, using a positive mindset to cheer her up.

“That’s why…We have to keep rushing ahead full speed without giving up, right?”

Reina-chan really is strong, after all. That’s why our rivalry continued strong all this time.

“True. And if we can’t give up, we just have to move on.”

“Exactly. Though we’ll need a lot of preparation to get through that.”

“For example?”

“At this rate, she’ll have the advantage for summer break. She gets to spend a lot more time with Nanato, and he’s already keeping his distance from us. She’ll think of this as her chance in an attempt to get close to him again. We’re in a pinch.”

Just as Reina-chan said, this is where Susuki-san’s turn will begin.

“Yeah, that’s true…”

“All we can do is use that trip and show our love for him. We can’t let him think of anybody else.”

“Yeah! Let’s think about all the ways we can make him happy.”

If we were still fighting like before, we’d probably try to think of ways to outsmart each other, but now we’re setting up a plan together. We can think about this together. We can make it so that Nanato-kun gets to gather all sorts of memories.

“With that decided, let’s hold a strategy meeting right away. I think a cafe would be best.”

“Yup, yup. We should prepare as quickly as possible.”

Reina-chan and I headed to a nearby cafe, cooking up all sorts of exciting ideas. We can talk about whatever we want, plan as much as we want. So far, I could never share my feelings for Nanato-kun with anybody, but now I have someone who understands me. It looks like Susuki-san is bigger of a threat than we thought. She was not holding back at all despite that being our first meeting. But surely, we’ll be fine…

—Susuki—

I finally met the Shiroki Tsubasa that Minami warned me about. She was undoubtedly cute, but I didn’t see her as that big of a threat. I pretended to head home and then watched Nanato from the shadows. The gal took Shiroki Tsubasa with her and left. I really couldn’t deal with her, and it seemed like the feeling was mutual. I kept my mouth shut since I saw Nanato coming out of the crepe shop, but I can’t stand her guts. So much so that I’d love to make her cry one day. She was the one who took my spot in the group and made Nanato and Hirose forget about me. She blocked off any possible return. That’s why she just pisses me off more than anybody else.

Meanwhile, Nanato was awkwardly walking up and down the plaza, not knowing what to do. He was like a little puppy abandoned by its family. He’s definitely waiting for a helping hand to arrive. And since nobody came to approach him, I had to step in. I might have destroyed everything in the first place, but that much the goddess would allow me, right?

“You okay?”

“Wah!”

I called out to him right next to his ear. He seemed to be shocked by that, frantically looking over at me.

“I thought you went home?”

“I was curious about you so I came back to watch. You were all by yourself, so I figured I should reach out to you.”

“I-I see. So you were concerned with me.”

I carefully walked toward him, trying not to make a sound.

“…Was that my fault?”

“No, it’s my bad. It’s all because of me.”

“Not at all.”

He was slowly getting swallowed by negative thoughts. He’s probably got a lot to think about, so I bet this is weighing down on him a lot. And knowing how kind he is, he’s gonna worry himself into a corner.

“What’s this paper about?”

“Tanaka-san told me to participate in this.”

The flier in his hand talked about some Patissier Training. And I guess that’s why the owner called him over earlier.

“I really think you should go there.”

“But…Should someone like me really be allowed there?”

“I’ve watched your efforts all this time. Believe me.”

I knew his answer was already decided, but I still proceeded to give him a push. Chasing after one’s dreams can be a terrifying thing. Especially because life always takes the unexpected route. But that’s why I’m going to carry his dream with him. And I’m ready to take responsibility if he were to fail.

“Let’s get a change of pace. Come with me.”

“I wanted to go home, though?”

“This is an order. Abide by it.”

“Okay…Wait, why am I being ordered?”

It ended up a bit more forceful than I would have preferred, but after dealing with that gal and Shiroki Tsubasa, I need to blow off some steam. And I have to reflect on it because I definitely took it a bit too far. And today during work, things were pretty awkward between us. When we had a quick break from the rush of customers, I was thinking of giving him a massage, but I hesitated at the very end. That’s why he started calling me a zombie, so I got angry at him.

If we just headed home like this, he’ll probably carry his worries for the next few days. But speaking from my experience, it’s best to clear that up right away. If I don’t help him, he will never be able to truly open up to me again. I took Nanato with me out of the shopping mall, heading to a nearby park. I stopped by my home on the way, grabbing a basketball.

“Now hold on, are you telling me to play basketball with you?”

“Exactly.”

“For real…”

He didn’t seem too fond of the idea, at least.

“Actually, when I was having a fight with my old man, I got hurt and became unable to move my right shoulder as freely as before, so I quit basketball.”

“You’re making up some fake past. And your father isn’t around.”

“Yeah, I was just kidding. It’s the backstory of a protagonist from an anime I like.”

Whenever he’s joking like this, his face would turn a bit red. That’s one of his rute parts. It’s like he’s embarrassed he really said that joke. I liked everything about him, so why did I run away?

“We’re here. Why not make this a battle?”

We arrived at the park after dark, and I handed Nanato the ball. I just hope this helps him get a change of pace.

“Time for a three-pointer!”

Nanato jumped and flung the ball in the direction of the hoop. It drew a beautiful arc in the sky, landing right into the net.

“Oh, I scored.”

“Not bad.”

Even Nanato seemed surprised at this result.

“So you actually got it in you. All my memories of you going for the shoot result in you missing.”

“Can you look down on me even more? I’ve been practicing a lot.” Nanato picked up the ball and handed it to me.

I guess I should go for a three-pointer, too. I only played basketball for half a year, but I was chosen as a regular before my other seniors. I should have the skill to back it up.

“Ah.”

However, my ball hit the rim, bouncing off.

“Woooo, I win!”

Nanato danced the samba as he declared his victory. Oddly enough, the frustration inside of me quickly changed to make me burst out laughing.

“Don’t think you’re hot stuff just because you beat me once.”

“It’s the level of focus I have today. The blueberries I ate today really help.”

“Don’t start an interview all on your own.”

The last time we played, he always got beaten by me or Hirose, so now that he got himself a victory, he’s probably beyond himself with joy.

“Let’s finish it with a free throw.”

“Sounds good.”

He seems to be confident now that he beat me once.

“Whoever scores more out of five, right?” I said.

“What if I score all of them?”

“Someone is confident now. I’ll make sure to put you back in your place.”

This is my chance…I might have to put in a bit of a bet.

“If I win, you have to promise me one day of your summer break.”

“Wh-What’s that supposed to mean?”

I want to hang out with him, but I can’t invite him directly. In this current situation, I don’t think he would agree either way, and it might only make him worry more. Plus, getting rejected would hurt, and leave me unable to ever invite him again. The only thing I can do is create a reason for him. Force him to, because that will be the greatest driving force.

“Why not hang out with your friends from school?”

“I don’t have any. I’m always alone at school.”

“Then why are you acting so proud about that?”

After cutting ties with Minami, I don’t have any more friends. Not like I’m sad about that, nor do I feel lonely. I tried to make some when I enrolled, but that didn’t work. It just showed me that I was happier by myself.

“Oh yeah, what about Ootsuka?”

“Cut ties with her.”

“Hey now…”

We’ve been friends all this time, but I found out that it was her lie that pulled me down into this abyss. She probably felt guilty for doing that, because she helped me again and again over the years. But even so, I couldn’t hope to make up for what she did to me.

“So? Are you going to accept my condition?”

“Urm…”

“Just don’t lose. Where did your confidence go?”

“I-I guess, yeah.”

“I’m going to do anything to you. You just have to tag along, is all.”

I don’t ask for everything. I just want to spend more time with him.

“And what if I win?”

“Then I’ll quit work.”

“Th-That’s…”

He told me to quit at first, but now he’s hesitating. Learning that he does need me even a small bit, I felt relieved from the bottom of my heart.

“Wouldn’t a risky bet make things more interesting?”

“Yeah. I haven’t taken many risks lately, so the thrill won’t hurt once in a while.”

Crossing a dangerous bridge together deepens bonds. Overcoming the danger of being separated might help us appreciate our time together more.

“Then I’ll start.”

I stood at the free-throw line, scoring my first point. I’m always the type who gets the strongest during the real deal. When I messed up during practice, I nailed it during the match.

“Your turn.”

“N-Not bad.”

I handed Nanato the ball, and I could see the pressure getting to him. Unlike me, he is the type to falter during the main deal. He’s diligent at practice, but his mental state can’t keep up during the match.

“I can do it, too!”

The attempt Nanato showed me flew way off, only hitting the metal pole carrying the rim.

“Calm down. You’re not going to score like this. And if you keep acting this wimpy, you’ll fail whenever that important moment comes in the future.”

“Sh-Shut up! I just haven’t played in so long, so I have to get back in the groove!”

I picked up the ball and went for my second shoot, scoring it easily. If things continue like this, I’ll be able to earn myself a free ticket to spend time with him.

“You better score this next one. If you can’t even score a single one, then we’re no match at all.”

I handed Nanato the ball yet again. If he can’t score, this won’t even be a competition.

“Ah, I did it.”

However, he managed to score on his second attempt, showing a relieved expression.

“See, I knew you could do it if you try.”

Just because of these few words exchanged, my body was burning up. Maybe I can’t remain pure any longer, after all. Our competition continued after that, but while I scored all 5, Nanato only managed to get in 2. It was already decided on my 4th attempt, but we still played until the very end.

“I loooost! How can you score all five of those…”

“That’s the difference of skill between us.”

Honestly, I’m surprised I scored all five of these, too. I know that I tried really hard there, but I guess I was just that desperate to go on a date with Nanato. It’s a bit embarrassing, even.

“Once you’ve made your plans for summer break, I expect you to report back to me.”

“Well, I guess. I’m going on a trip with everyone this break, so I gotta know soon.”

A trip with everyone…The words he said on a whim shattered my confidence. The time I let go of him, that gal and Shiroki Tsubasa will enjoy his presence. They say that you only realize what’s important to you after you lose it, but by then, it’s already too late. I can only pick up the pieces of what I destroyed, gazing at its shattered appearance. But even that…is better than having nothing at all.

“Susuki? Why do you look so sad? You won, right?”

“Because I am sad.”

“Huh?”

“Spending time with you like this filled me with memories.”

And once you obtain something, it makes you want more. It makes me look for a way to fix my treasure by putting the pieces together. Even though it can’t ever be done…

“Actually, forget what I said. It might only hurt both of us in the long run.”

“R-Right…Well, we’re a done deal, anyway.”

“Exactly. We’re over.”

Being told directly by Nanato made it feel like the faint hope I had turned into dust.

“Anyway, I’ll see you. Thanks for hanging out.”

“W-Wait, Ikumi…!”

“Huh?”

Nanato called my name. I guess spending time like this reminded him of the past. But because he did that…it’ll make it harder for me to give up on him…Because this shows I’m still alive inside of him. I’m slumbering deep within his mind. I want to wake up those feelings and bring them back to him.

“Sorry, I meant Susuki.”

“It’s okay. You don’t have to correct yourself.”

“R-Right. Also, you wanted to hang out to make yourself feel better? Not for my sake?” Nanato blushed and tried to run away.

“Can you not act all self-absorbed? Why would I have to tag along with you to make you feel better?”

“Oh you damn…!”

“It wasn’t for me. It was for the sake of both of us. You keep pondering about something lately, and it’s dragging me down.”

He seemed to be surprised at my statement, because he was trying to swallow the words at face value.

“Anyway, see you around.”

“H-Hey.”

As I started walking, Nanato gave me a lonely look. But, we can’t stay together any longer. My body has begun aching for him. Today was a failure. I did something I shouldn’t have done. I want Nanato. I want him back. But if I get him back even the smallest bit, then all the desires sleeping inside of me will resurface. I was wrong for stepping across this line. My heart won’t stop racing. And I doubt this will stop until I manage to get him back.

“It’s fine, Nanato. We can see each other at work.”

“Don’t you quit on me, okay?”

“…I won’t act rashly ever again, don’t worry.”

The reason he grew anxious now is because I hurt him in the past. And the one to heal that wound will either be that gal or Shiroki Tsubasa—Or possibly even…

—Yuzu—

Summer break would start in just three days. Today during lunch, we managed to pinpoint the hotel we’d stay at, making plans for the day.

“I can’t wait, Reina-chan.”

“Yeah. I wonder what bag I should bring with me…”

Reinan and Tsubasa-chan were excitedly talking about our trip. Yuzu should get ready, too. Staying over with Tsubasa-chan will be fun. Sleeping together, going to a hot spring together…That’s just heaven, no? Just thinking about it made Yuzu grin. However, the big problem is still that Tsubasa-chan and Reinan started dating. No idea how that happened, but it’s probably because they were hurt by being rejected by Amamicchi, now supporting each other.

At this rate, Yuzu’s gonna be pushed away, Tsubasa-chan taken, and be turned into Chiba Tsubasa. And the only way to avoid that from happening, I have to get Reinan together with Amamicchi. I think it’s necessary to change my approach entirely. Because if Tsubasa-chan and Amamicchi end up dating, it’s game over for me.

“Lately, most inns have a hot spring for each room, right?”

“For expensive ones, yeah. And for us, that’s the best, honestly.”

“The inn you suggested really is great, Reina-chan. I can’t wait.”

“Don’t underestimate my taste, you hear?”

So far, Reinan seemed rather disinterested in Tsubasa-chan, but surely, she’s fallen victim to her cuteness now. On top of that, Tsubasa-chan said she slept in the same bed with Reinan, so they most likely already spent a night together…Or to be fair, it could have just been Tsubasa-chan being careless about what she says. Reinan said there’s nothing going on between them, but from the distance they have and the air around them, they’re trusting each other on the level of being a couple, no doubt.

“Let’s all think of our individual plans and match them with the others before the head off, yeah?”

“Good idea. Rather than arguing once we’re there, it’s better to be efficient right from the get-go.”

Honestly, Yuzu’s completely lost on what’s going on. What’s more clear than anything is that Yuzu…became Tsubasa-chan’s number two. But, she can’t stand that. She wants to be even more important to her.

“Reina-chan, the plan we talked about before, right? It’s a bit embarrassing, so I’m going to whisper it in your ear instead.”

“Hmmm…Not bad, not bad. That’s gonna be crazy.”

No, scratch that. Yuzu is just lonely being left out like this while they’re flirting around! They’re setting up plans all without Yuzu! Gaaah…Maybe Yuzu would be able to join them if she fell in love with Amamicchi, too.

“Amamicchi, gimme attention!”

The boys were having fun talking with each other, so Yuzu pulled on Amamicchi’s arm. No way she could fall in love with him, but clinging to him might cause a misunderstanding between Reinan and Tsubasa-chan.

“What happened to you?”

“Play with Yuzu! Give Yuzu attention!”

He was willing to leave the group of boys to talk to me. That makes it obvious just how good of a guy he is.

“So, what’s your plan now?”

“Sumo?”

“You serious?”

“Fight! Fight!”

Yuzu clung to his waist, pushing him against the wall. He returned the grip to try and push Yuzu back. It might look like we’re flirting around, so as planned, Tsubasa-chan and Reinan came over.

“Shibayu, what are you doing?”

“You’re troubling Nanato-kun.”

S-Scary?! If looks could kill, Yuzu would be skewed meat now. This is bad…No matter what Yuzu does, it only backfires.

*

School ended with Yuzu still feeling under the weather, as she headed to her shift at the juice shop. Today, her shift was with Ootsuka Minami-chan from another high school.

“Yuzuyu-chan! Heyo! You’re as cute as always.”

“Ahh, hey Minami-tan.”

Minami-chan praised Yuzu first thing as she leaped at Yuzu’s arm.

“The other day, the owner saw me playing with my phone during work, so she scolded me. Isn’t that annoying? I was trying really hard not to laugh during the lecture.”

“M-Must be rough…”

Clearly, she brought that on herself. At the very least, she is now keeping her phone in her locker, so she’s reflecting on her actions.

“I got threatened to get fired, too.”

“But…you didn’t?”

“I said I wanted to work more with my beloved owner, so she cheered for me to improve. Life’s on easy mode because I’m so cute, I swear.”

Seeing how bat-shit crazy Minami-chan is, was a relief to Yuzu. Knowing that people like her existed made Yuzu feel like she wasn’t so bad.

“Huh? What’s wrong? You seem down lately.”

Yuzu’s worries must have shown on her face. It was a mixture of happiness and regret that filled Yuzu’s heart. Because if Tsubasa-chan chose Reinan, then there’s also a chance she might choose Yuzu sometime in the future.

“A lot of stuff happened…And you’re not doing much better than Yuzu, are you?”

“Yeah, I went through a lot. Cut ties with someone I really cared about.”

“For reals? You’re off a lot worse than Yuzu. Just let her know you need to talk.”

Yuzu gently embraced Minami-chan. People like her really struggle to show when they need help, so Yuzu is a bit worried.

“What about you?”

“Yuzu got cucked.”

“Seriously? That’s like the end of the world,” Minami-chan said and hugged Yuzu back.

But since her body was eerily cold, it didn’t warm up Yuzu in the slightest.

“When we’re both hurt, we should try to heal each other’s wounds.”

Is this how Tsubasa-chan and Reinan got so close all of a sudden?

“Hey, Yuzuyu-chan? How about we just let it all out?” Minami-chan whispered into Yuzu’s ear.

It felt like the devil’s whisper, but Yuzu just nodded. She wanted to feel better.

“Then tag along after work, yeah?”

Minami-chan smiled and then started working. I wonder what she’s planning…

Our shift ended, so Yuzu followed Minami-chan out of the shopping mall, heading to the train station. We walked down the entertainment district, full of bars and host clubs. Yuzu rarely walked through here because it was a bit scary. The couple in front of us had their arms locked as they walked into the nearest love hotel.

“Where are we going?”

“A secret. Wait until we get there.”

“D-Don’t take Yuzu to some weird palace…”

“It’ll be fun, and it’ll feel really good.”

What?! Is Yuzu-san going to climb the stairs to adulthood today? But…Yuzu already has Tsubasa-chan! Oh no!

“But…while wearing our uniforms?”

“What’s the big deal?” Minami-chan seemed used to it, as she remained calm. “See, we’re here.”

She suddenly stopped in her tracks in front of a karaoke box.

“Huh? Karaoke?”

“Exactly.”

“O-Oh, I see…”

Yuzu totally had the wrong idea. Maybe Yuzu was an idiot all along.

“Actually, Yuzu really isn’t the type to sing much at karaoke.”

“I don’t feel like singing either.”

“Then…why are we here?”

…Is she planning on doing something weird to Yuzu? She’s not gonna force Yuzu to say embarrassing things using the microphone, right?

“We’re gonna scream.”

“…Huh?”

Unable to beat the current flow, Yuzu followed Minami-chan inside the karaoke box.

“That one mushroom-haired guy from my class?! He always talks to me like he knows everything about me! You don’t know damn shit, so leave me alone!”

“When is that next manga volume coming out?! It’s been three years, damn it!”

“How easy is it for a phone screen to break?! Which idiot made it?!”

“Shiiiit!!”

Minami-chan and I just screamed whatever came to our minds.

“See? Feels a lot better, right?”

“Yeah, Yuzu feels so…refreshed.”

All the stress built up inside of me was given free rein to gush out, making my heart feel lighter.

“I also have someone I like, but I doubt it’s ever going to happen.”

“Oh, really?”

So she also has a crush on someone. Maybe it’s that person she cut ties with?

“Isn’t it the same for you, Yuzuyu-chan?”

“Well…”

“That’s why, once the line’s cut, come see me.”

Surely, she’s the same as Yuzu, so she understands my position.

“Because then, I bet I’ll be able to move on.”

“Minami-tan…”

Don’t know why, but this time was rather enjoyable. Maybe because Yuzu knew she could be reassured to have Minami-chan around if everything failed. Her existence could push Yuzu’s back. For now, making some enjoyable memories during summer break is most important…But maybe I should muster up my courage once this summer is over…?
