Prologue
—Nanato—
Life is made up of an infinite amount of choices. A saying like this has been established for centuries now. And even in my average high school life, I am forced to make constant choices. Do I join a club or not? Where should I work part-time? All choices that could possibly impact my life greatly. And today was another choice regarding my love life. During lunch break, I confessed that I have someone I like. And this person wasn’t either Tsubasa or Reina. I made the choice to push them away. Of course, this was a massive shock for the two of them.
The same expression that Tsubasa made the day I moved to Kyushu. The same cold expression when Susuki rejected me and told me to never get involved with her again. Seeing their reactions, this trauma came back to assault my mind, forcing me to break out in tears. Feeling embarrassed, I ran off to the toilet. No matter how much time passes, you’ll end up being separated from people. The people you really jam with might just despise you the very next day. I’m painfully aware of this possibility, as I’ve experienced it many times over. That’s why I was prepared for them to cast me aside. It would hurt if that were to happen, but it was my choice. I just couldn’t bring myself to choose either of them. I don’t know if my choice was correct, but this was the answer I wanted.
The committee meeting after school ended, and when I returned to the classroom, Tsubasa and Reina were waiting for me.
“Let’s go home together, Nanato-kun,” Tsubasa said with as kind of an expression as always.
“I didn’t think you’d be waiting for me.”
“We’re friends, duh,” Reina commented as she slapped me on the back.
Maybe my decision…wasn’t wrong after all.
