—Tsubasa—

Yesterday, Ootsuka-san told me that Nanato-kun was going out with another woman while keeping it a secret from us. Even as I’ve calmed down and thought it over, I can’t believe her words. After all, Nanato-kun isn’t the type of person to do such a thing. Of course, I’m not denying the possibility that he might start dating someone else, but in that event, he would definitely tell us. I know his personality more than anybody else. He might be skilled with his hands, but he himself can be rather clumsy. He can’t go out in secret with someone.

Judging from my prior conversations with Ootuska-san, she’s the type to twist people’s perceptions with her words, so she probably blew up this fact and created a misconception. That said, I can’t just brush it off like it was nothing. After all, he was meeting up with a woman I didn’t know in secret. Even if they aren’t dating, they are definitely close. The problem is that he didn’t come clean about any relationship. And until it can come to that, I have to make up with Reina-san so that he can feel comfortable in our friend group again.

I should’ve kept my calm more…Knowing Nanato-kun, he probably cares about both Reina-san and me, not wanting to hurt either of us, unable to choose. And because the two of us have been fighting for a while now, it created fissures in our group, forcing him to rush an answer. What I can do now is make up with Reina-san to ensure that he doesn’t have to worry about that. We shouldn’t be fighting for him, but keeping him at peace from a safe distance. If not, we might create a result that becomes irreversible.

As lunch break came, everyone started eating. I want to make up with Reina-san, but can’t fight the right timing. She was constantly glancing at me, so she probably realized this couldn’t continue.

“Actually, I found someone I like.”

“Wha…” Reina-san’s hands stopped as she froze up.

“For real? What class is she from?”

Hirose-kun didn’t seem shaken at all, asking for the details. Yuzuyu-chan was fidgeting awkwardly as she looked over at us.

“Too embarrassing to tell. But she’s not from this school.”

Oh no…I had a feeling that this would happen, but this is too quick. That said, I don’t know the truth behind his feelings. He might just be saying this to ensure that we could still be friends. And since he didn’t come clean about a girlfriend, this is not too late.

“…You’re the worst, Amamicchi.”

Yuzuyu-chan must have said this based on our feelings, but she looked furious.

“Sorry.” Glared at by Yuzuyu-chan, Nanato-kun apologized.

But, something started appearing in his eyes that I didn’t like.

“Huh? Amamicchi, are you crying?”

She caught on to his tears and brought it up.

“Oh? Ah? Huh…” He was bewildered.

“Nanato-kun didn’t do anything bad!” I just screamed without really knowing why.

In shock, our other classmates looked over at us.

“…I’m gonna head to the restroom for a moment.” Nanato-kun ran away and quickly rushed out of the classroom.

Even so, the atmosphere was too heavy, with Reina-san frozen stiff even now, Yuzuyu-chan awkwardly looking down.

“I’ll check up on him. Just leave him be for today, yeah?” Hirose-kun grew worried about Nanato-kun and left after him.

“Sorry, Tsubasa-chan…”

“You shouldn’t have…No, you’re not at fault either, Yuzuyu-chan.”

She must have said that because she knew of my feelings. I can’t blame her for that. But I also couldn’t sit still, so I went after Hirose-kun.

“I told you to leave him alone, right?” He stopped and blocked off my path.

“But…”

“I understand how you feel. But, that’s the decision he made. I don’t blame her for the comment, but he’s desperately thought about a way to make everyone happy.”

So we really ended up cornering him…We’re the awful ones who made him cry. I was only thinking about myself.

“There’s something I’d like you to know.”

“Yes. Please tell me.”

Surprisingly, Hirose-kun had a story to share.

“Before he met Chiba in middle school, we were actually a group of friends with two other girls. He dated one of those for a few days, but their relationship ended quickly, and it ruined our friend group.”

So he has an ex-girlfriend…I’m so jealous.

“He’s really taken a hit from that. Seeing how you and Chiba fight over him, he must have been reminded of back then, terrified him.”

Yeah, having this pointless fight with Reina-san made me lose sight of what was really important.

“You might call him a coward, but he was just trying to do the best for all of us. That’s why he chose all of us instead of just one.”

“That’s very much like him.”

“Well, if he lost another friend group like before, he might really break down from it. So I’d be happy if you could just give up on him.”

“…I’m sorry, but I can’t do that.”

I can’t answer his request. Even if he’s Nanato-kun’s friend, I can’t.

“You’re willing to sacrifice everything so that you can be with him?”

“No. I care about him, but I care about everyone else, so I’m going to create a situation where I can protect everyone.”

“I don’t think there’s a convenient solution like that out there.”

“Then I can just make one. I’ve given up on giving up on Nanato-kun.”

When I came to Tokyo, it was already decided that I would overcome any roadblock in my way.

“You’re a stubborn one, huhß But if you care for him that much, then maybe you have a chance.” He smiled.

I can tell he cares about his friend.

“There’s just one thing I want to know. That person he dated for a few days…Did they meet recently?”

“…Like a miracle, they’ve ended up at the same crepe shop. Chiba would probably go on a rampage if she knew, so please keep that a secret from her.”

“I figured.”

So that person I saw with Nanato-kun the other day was his ex-girlfriend. That’s why they were talking and felt oddly close. So Ootsuka-san was lying after all. But even so, the situation doesn’t change.

“Huh? What are you two up to here? Lunch break is gonna end.” Nanato-kun came back from the toilet.

He made a face like nothing had happened, trying to act calm. However, he’s just keeping up a facade.

“Nanato-kun!”

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m not going anywhere, okay?”

Hearing my words, he showed a relieved expression. Being separated from him was tough for me, but he was suffering too. And now, he’s afraid of experiencing that again. That’s why I want to watch over him no matter what. As long as he doesn’t push me away, I’ll stay with him.

But for that, I need to talk to Reina-san. It’s too late to just wake up. We have to work together so that Nanato-kun can be with everyone else. And I’m curious about that ex-girlfriend of his. There’s a chance she might actually take him from us again. So to avoid that, Reina-san and I will have to work together. Since she cares for him as much as I do, she’s my strongest rival, but also my strongest ally in protecting Nanato-kun’s happiness.

‘There’s something I need to tell you. Please wait for me behind the school.’

I sent Reina-san a simple message. If she really feels the same way as me, then she should definitely be willing.

—Reina—

Nanato said he has someone he likes. Hearing about that, my entire body just stopped functioning. Losing against Shiroki is one thing…But losing to some random nobody I’ve never even met? That said, since he didn’t say they were dating, it means that there was still a chance. Though that random person is a dangerous threat. Unlike Shiroki, I don’t know what she’s doing with him or where. Thinking about it that way, I felt restless. I realized that this wasn’t the time to be fighting with Shiroki. If we don’t make up and call a cease-fire, we’ll both lose.

Now that I think about it, when Shibayu reproached Nanato, I bet she must have said this knowing of Shiroki’s feelings…But that was the first time I saw him cry. Wait…so we pushed him into a corner to the point it made him break down like that? So it’s not like he didn’t choose either of us…he couldn’t. But, I wanted him to choose me no matter what, which made me fight with Shiroki, forcing Nanato to make his choice. In the end…I might have been the one acting disgusting. I was only thinking about myself, pushing him over the edge.

For now, I have to apologize to Shiroki and stop fighting. This isn’t the time to be acting selfish. And conveniently enough, she sent me a message to meet her after school. It’s like she’s gonna confess to me or something. Well, this must be about Nanato. She probably has her own thoughts. Once classes ended, I headed to the back of the school, as Shiroki appeared shortly after.

“What do you want?”

She had a grave expression on her face, she must be panicking.

“Reina-san, go out with me!”

“Huh?”

Hold on, it’s an actual confession?! Why?! Is she just fine with anybody?!

“This isn’t the time to be fighting. If we don’t get a grip, Nanato-kun might choose someone else. That’s why we have to come to like each other. We have to make Nanato-kun happy. Being chosen comes second.”

Oh crap, my head is in a total mess. I can’t follow at all. So we’re supposed to all be dating each other?

“E-Even if you suddenly tell me that…”

“I know! But it has to be done! And to deepen our relationship, I want you to call me ‘Tsubasa’!”

“Tsu…Tsubasa?”

“Yup! Tsubasa.”

She took my hand, smiling happily as I called her name.

“Our feelings for Nanato-kun won’t lose against anybody! That’s why, let’s try to make him happy as the both of us!”

“Yeah…Rather than having him taken by someone else, it might be better to just share him instead.”

I want to always be with him. I don’t care for the shape this wish takes.

“But, I’ve run out of confidence. I just kept thinking about myself, not bothering about his feelings.”

“I felt the same way, Reina-san. All I cared about was myself, not thinking how he might feel. But because we feel this way, we aspire to reach the same goal. Together, we can achieve so much more.”

“Th-That’s true. You might be right.”

“Yes. So, you’ll say yes to my confession, right?!”

“Yeah…To be fair, I wanted to make up with you, too.”

In the heat of the moment, I found myself agreeing. Either way, it doesn’t matter much if I can’t go out with Nanato…Wait, hold on. What if Shibayu heard about this?! I should probably tell Tsubasa to keep a secret about—

“Oh? Shibayu-chan?”

Around five meters away, I could see Shibayu’s head poking out from behind the wall. Oh lord, she heard all that?! She looked over at us in absolute disbelief, realizing that we’d caught on to her, and then ran away.

It’s…It’s over…Knowing how much she likes Tsubasa, seeing this whole scene of me being chosen over her, she’ll probably go crazy. With Nanato’s unexpected choice, Tsubasa’s abrupt decision, our whole friend group is going mad. And not only that, but summer break was right around the corner…
