Afterword

Nice to meet you, I’m Ikeda Akiya, and I’m the person who wrote this novel.

From 2018 to 2019, I lived in UK Bristol myself. The experiences and sights I witnessed there are what gave life to this novel. Many places exist in reality, with their respective graffiti, and the purge of the Bearpit is something I even saw myself. Surely, Boudicia, Yoshi, Lara, Aeon, and George live somewhere here. If you’re ever in Bristol, maybe you can even find them.

I received a lot of help in finishing this novel. First, if the dear judges from the Dengeki Prize committee had not given this novel such a high evaluation, it would have never seen the light of day. Following that, my two editors helped me, who didn’t know left from right, in my writing process, giving me passionate advice at every corner. Needless to say, the colleagues I got to know during the selection of this 26th Prize were all very kind to me. My illustrator Mirea-san breathed life into these characters with their fashionable illustrations, paired with the wonderful visuals by my designer, who helped in deepening the worldview of this novel. Of course, there were many more people who helped in distributing and making this novel available. Thank you so much to everyone.

Before I bring this to an end, please let me give my personal thanks. First, my good friend Muratani Yukari, who I’ve known for 20 years now, debuted one step ahead of me at the 25th Dengeki Prize. You deserve my special gratitude. I was able to debut like this because I chased after your back, and the day we shook hands at the award ceremony is something I will never forget for the rest of my life. Next, a good friend of mine who was in a band with me, Miyashita Yuu. If not for your advice, I wouldn’t have made it this far. I also have to mention my friends who indulged in the world of toys together with me. My imagination was sharpened greatly thanks to us playing Diaclone, Microman, and Transformers. I’ll be needing your strength again to learn more about the world like that, so I am counting on your support.

Of course, I cannot forget my family and friends who read my novel, as well as my beautiful wife and daughter that I’ll be spending the rest of my days. And of course, I need to pay my respect to the city of Bristol and all the graffiti writers there. This novel was born from your graffiti culture. And I would be delighted if more people learned about the greatness of graffiti, its beauty, and the respect it deserves.

Just like all graffiti, or possibly even art in total, this novel will one day be overwritten. And I wish to accomplish that by creating an even greater story while borrowing the strength of the people by my side.

Finally…To you, who is reading this right now. Let’s meet again someday, at a new wall, with another drawing.

See you later, alligator!

Ikeda Akiya
